IMF links new tranche with reformed GST

ISLAMABAD--July 11--The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has linked the approval of fresh grant for Pakistan with the imposition of reformed General Sell Tax (GST) from October 2010.

The sources said during the visit of Prime Minister of the finance ministry, the government's economic managers has informed the Prime Minister of condition being set by the IMF for approval of fresh grant.

The economic managers have urged the prime minister to give his consent for the imposition of 15 percent reformed GST from October 2010, arguing it is in the best interest of Pakistan.

To discuss the issue, the IMF high-ups, headed by country Director Adnan Mazari are scheduled to visit Pakistan on July 18 for getting guarantees from Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for implementing a reformed GST from October 1, 2010 as well as scrutinising Pakistani ability to achieve its envisaged macroeconomic targets in the financial year 2010-11.

The IMF' team is expected to hold detailed discussion with Ministry of Finance high-ups regarding the reformed GST and financial conditions for releasing the next tranche of the loan.
