12m persons affected from flood, donors informed

Donors informed 0.6 m houses, 132421 Sq km area affected
Lost of lives& property rising, world community to help needed time, Hina


ISLAMABAD, (Financial Updates): The Pakistan briefed its development partners and international donors about the worst disasters of the flood affected area and appealed for urgent assistance in rescue and relief activities here on Friday.

The Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar chaired a briefing session on the floods situation.

The session was attended by more than 30 development partners of the Government of Pakistan.

Addressing the donors’ community, the minister stated that Pakistan faces a challenge of unprecedented magnitude as floods have wreaked havoc across the longitudinal length of the country. Precious lives have been lost and damage to property runs into billions of rupees with toll rising by the minute. Destruction of entire villages and towns, infrastructure, livestock and crops, in addition to large scale human displacement, necessitates urgent provision of supplies.
The Government has deployed its resources to rescue and relief efforts but the enormity of the challenge calls for generous assistance from the international community.

The Minister of State appealed that the donors should work with the Government of Pakistan and emphasized that relief phase to be limited to 45 days so that focus can be shifted to the early recovery plans. She urged the world community for immediate assistance in Pakistan’s time of need.

On the occasion, General (R) Nadeem Ahmed, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) presented facts and figures about the damage caused by the floods in various parts of the country.

While comparing the lost between the earth quack 2005 and the flood 2010, he informed the participants that more than 12 million people affected from the flood and 3.2 million population had affected from earth quack 2005 adding that 132421 Sq kilo meter areas affected from flood.
He said that 650,000 house damaged during the worst flood as 600,000 house had damaged during earth quack 2005.

Nadeem Ahmed said that the Federal government constituted a Fund to be called the National Disater Management Fund for meeting any threatening disaster situation or disaster since July 2007. He said that the National Disater Management Fund shall be financed from the sources of the grants made by the Federal Government; loans, aid and donations from the national or international agencies; and donations received from any other sources.

He said that the National Disaster Management Fund shall be administered by the National Authority towards meeting the expenses for emergency preparedness, response, mitigation, relief and reconstruction.
