The Pakistan Government on Thursday took long-awaited decision to increase service charges of USA, ISAF and NATO cargo, determined 10 years ago.

The decision has been taken in a high level meeting of National Logistic Board (NLB) under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

The meeting approved different recommendations, proposed by the NLB.

In a brief presentation, the Director General NLB told the meeting about Monitoring and Coordination Regime, Progress Report-Afghan Transit Trade, Registration of NLC in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Purchase of Light Vehicles and Revised Ration allowance for employees of NLB.

The meeting deliberated at length on the implementation of Monitoring and Coordination regime for US / ISAF / NATO cargo including the already taken measures in Computerized documentation, NLC transit Slip, Sealing and Scanning of Containers, Installation of tracking devices and opening of check points. The meeting discussed the measures to avoid any duplication in the functioning of NLC and Customs department of FBR. It was decided that above recommendations on Monitoring and Coordination regime will be discussed in detail in the next meeting in the presence of Chairman FBR, which was not present in the meeting.

The Finance Minster also approved the proposals of increasing service charges of US, ISAF and NATO cargo from 1st January, 2012.

These cargos go to Afghanistan via Pakistani land route from different countries. Currently, Pakistani Government receives service charges determined in 2001, almost 10 years ago when the petroleum prices was not more than 30 doller per barrel.

The Pakistan government niether mentioned in the statement about the existing structure of service charges nor new structure as it is the most secret issue so far.

The NLC is responsible for transportation of these corgos from Karachi Port to the country's outgoing point Chaman and TuKham check points on Pak-Afghanistan Border.

The other recommendations, which were approved in the meeting, are “Independent Registration of NLC Developers with Saudi Registration Authority” “New Commercial Registration Agreement between NLC and Qatar JV” “Purchase of 21 light vehicles” and “Revised Ration Allowance for Employees of NLB”.
