The World Bank team comprises of Bill Young, Program Leader (SAWI), Christina Leb, Senior Water Resources Specialist and Mr.Javaid Afzal, Senior Environmental specialist met with the Chairman, PARC here at PARC (HQs) Islamabad in connection with South Asia Water Initiative (SAWI). SAWI is a multi-donor partnership between the World Bank and the Governments of Australia, Norway and the United Kingdom.
SAWI’s goal is to increase regional cooperation in the management of the Himalayan River systems and support sustainable, fair and inclusive development, and climate resilience. SAWI seeks to promote the goals of poverty reduction, economic development, mitigation and adaptation to climate change and water security through significant and measurable improvements in water resources management and development at the regional, international basin and national levels in South Asia.
The Purpose of the team visit was to explore the water resources development and management issues in Indus basin system’s and identify partners for collaborative work.
Dr. Nadeem Amjad, Member (NRD) and Acting Chairman PARC briefed about PARC’s network for carrying out research work in different region and ecologies. Mr.Muhammad Yasin, Director CAEWRI and Mr. Zakir Hussain Dahri, PSO, CAEWRI presented the water resources management challenges in the Indus basin, PARC’s endeavors to address these issues and future plan of action. The world bank team appreciated the comprehensive work being carried out by CAEWRI, PARC and expressed a hope for joining hand in future to work for the issues related to water resources development and management in Indus Basin system’s. On this occasion, Sardar Ghulam Mustafa, Director (PR&P) and other senior PARC scientists were also present in the meeting.
